Why Should I Go To Counseling? Often people put off dealing with problems and issues they are facing, hoping they just might go away. Unfortunately, this is not a very effective way to manage your life. Going to a therapist can be thought of like going to see a personal trainer at the gym vs. going to the gym on your own. When you go on your own you know that you’ll probably get a decent workout. BUT, if you meet with a personal trainer, you know they are going to push you and challenge you in ways you might never have considered…only accelerating your development. That’s our job too! We are here to challenge you and support you to live the life that you were meant to live.
Orientations; How to Choose a Therapist: Within psychology, there are a variety of different orientations practiced; this means the approach a therapist has to counseling. Some differing focuses are on: thoughts & behaviors, feelings, coping mechanisms, relational issues with family or partner, past experiences and how they affect you today, creating meaning in life, and many others. Additionally, each therapist brings their own personal style to psychotherapy. This adds a variation to the counseling experience, meaning not all psychologists are the same.
We therefore emphasize the fact that not every counselor is for every person. It is important to consider what your needs are and sometimes “shop around” to find the right match. This means ensuring the therapist you work with is right for you as we know just how important this relationship is for your personal process and growth. Following your first meeting, you should feel that your therapist is trustworthy, compassionate, there is a connection, the therapist cares, that you were listened to, respected, you should feel comfortable, and overall be looking forward to continuing to work with this person. Trust your instinct!
We want to make certain that your therapeutic experience is satisfying. We have many competent therapists at our site, willing to make assure a good match. Please contact us so that we may assist you in making your psychotherapeutic experience one that fits for you and your family.
